Silvana Rea

If, as Maurice Merleau-Ponty (2004) asserted, there is a deep connection between an individual's life and creative work, this collection of essays charting the career of João Augusto Frayze-Pereira gives us a measure of what has been demanded of the author's life by his work.

Frayze-Pereira's life is constructed through his position as a professor at the Institute of Psychology of the University of São Paulo and founder of its Laboratory of Study and Research in the Psychology of Art, and his work as a psychoanalyst and teacher associated to the Brazilian Psychoanalytic Society. It is equally a life dedicated to a passionate involvement with art. We can trace the development of his approach from The temptation of the ambiguous: On the sensing thing and scientific objectivity [A tentação do ambiguo: sobre a coisa sensível e o objetivismo científico] (Frayze-Pereira, 1984) and Wellspring: Art and madness exhibited [Olho d'água: arte e loucura em exposição] (Frayze-Pereira, 1995), respectively, his Master's dissertation and doctorate thesis and through numerous articles and essays, many of which have appeared in this publication.
