Review by:
Neri Daurella

In times such as ours, when the possible contribution of psychoanalysis to psychotherapy in the 21st century is being questioned from so many quarters, the publication of this book is indeed to be welcomed as a testimony to the creative transformation of psychoanalytic thinking and its capacity to survive into our present. Psychoanalysis has developed in many different directions since its initial grounding in fundamental Freudian intuitions, and the book here reviewed attests to one of the most promising and interesting of these trajectories related most vividly to us by its author.

Joan Coderch was born in Barcelona in 1930 and is a member of the Spanish Psychoanalytical Society and one of its most prolific authors. His books trace the development of his thinking which from Kleinian theoretical bases evolves towards what we know today as Relational Psychoanalysis. To any reader interested in following that development I would recommend comparing his earlier work such as The Theory and Technique of Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy (1987) or Interpretation in Psychoanalysis: The Foundation and Theory of Technique (1995), with his more recent: The Patient-Therapist Relationship (2001), Plurality and Dialogue in Psychoanalysis (2006), leading us to the book here reviewed: Relational Psychotherapy in Practice: The Interactive Model in the Field of Psychoanalysis (2010).
