The double: a therapeutic operator in the clinic of narcissistic-identity sufferings

Johann Jung and Alexandre Francisco

The clinic of narcissistic-identity pathologies reveals a double relationship in the transference-countertransference axis which refers to deep identity layers. From a clinical case, the authors suggest the hypothesis that the double relationship, with its different modalities, would play the role of a transference attractor that supports the potential identity transformations. The emergence of the double relationship on the transference scene and the painful affects that come with it, will allow the patient, with the support of the reflexive function of the clinician and his capacities to survive the patient’s destructivity, to reorganise his relation to himself and to the other.
