How Does Analytic Child Therapy Inform Adult Treatment? An Introduction

In the past few years, there has been a marked increase in awareness and interest in the realm of spontaneity and creativity in the psychoanalytic encounter, along with a burgeoning literature on the subject. The idea that the analytic experience includes communications that are nonverbal, implicitly known, and often spontaneous and improvisational in nature is now well accepted. The authors in this group of articles, all analytic child therapists, were asked to address the question of how analytic work with children might inform adult treatment. The question seemed timely and potentially contributive, given that those who work with children are immersed in a world where spontaneity, creativity, and nonverbal and cross-modal modes of communication are the norm. The clinical case presented here, “Miss Nicht” (that of a severely disturbed 3-year-old and her mother), allows the reader to enter into the world of this dyad's disordered attachment. The three discussions that follow offer different perspectives on the work and on the question at hand.
