History Within Us: Discussion of Sucharov’s “We Are All Located Somewhere”

Janna Sandmeyer, Ph.D.

Sucharov’s theoretical and heartfelt article asserts that all dyadic experience cannot be understood outside of the wider sociopolitical context in which that experience is embedded, and that a radical contextual view embraces this notion and furthers it by including the interconnected, nonlinear complexity of a continually evolving context. I agree with this notion, along with Thomas Kohut’s assertion that history runs through us. Thus, my aim in this discussion is to further elucidate Sucharov’s premise both theoretically and clinically. In doing so, I will address the ongoingness of history, the impact of cultural trauma on personal experience of history, and the various dimensions of sociopolitical power dynamics that arise in clinical enactments.
