Dear Father Freud,

This is to reach you on May 6th and congratulate you with a bow and a kiss on the hand, as grandchildren used to do in davs gone by. And so that it may not come empty-handed it brings with it the first draft of a plan that I would like to start on as soon as the Erziehung is finished: i.e. a novel about Nietzsche's madness. You know that ever since the end of the war I have turned away bitterly from this idol of my youth. There are signs of this in several of my books, clearest of all in Bilanz. Now after many years I have come close to him again, because in you I recognized the man who has carried out all that Nietzsche first dreamt of: who has given new life to the world of antiquity, who has reversed old values, who has made a clean sweep of Christianity, who is the true immoralist and a-theist; who has given new names to the human instincts and who has contributed a critique of the course of civilization as we know it-and whatever else there was in common between you. But you have avoided all his distortions and follies, just because you invented analysis and not Zarathustra.
