27 Sept. 1912

Dear Professor,

Since attending the Weimar Congress last autumn, the study of psycho-analysis has continued to preoccupy me, and the further I penetrate into it the more absorbed I become. And now my wish to spend some months in Vienna is about to be realized.1 And you will allow me to approach you, and attend your lectures, and also to be admitted to your Wednesday Evenings, won't you? The sole aim of my visit to Vienna is to devote myself further to every aspect of this matter.

Yours faithfully,
Lou Andreas-Salomé

Notes to "Letter from Lou Andreas-Salomé to Freud, September 27, 1912"

1 On receiving Freud's positive reply Lou A.-S. set off for Vienna accompanied by her young friend Ellen Delp—‘after a six-months autodidactic preliminary study’, as she says in Lebensrückblick—and stayed there from 25 October 1912 to 6 April 1913, i.e., throughout the winter semester. She attended Freud's lecture course ‘Some Chapters from the Theory of Psycho-Analysis’, which took place in the lecture room of the Psychiatric Clinic, Saturdays from 8 to 9, ‘by private arrangement’, and also the Wednesday Evening Discussions, which had been founded in 1902 as the ‘Psychological Wednesday Society’.
