Dear Professor, many thanks for your letter which got here quite quickly and which made me happy on account of the good personal news it contained. I had no idea that it was your youngest son who was at the front (he was ill while I was in Vienna); I thought it was your middle and eldest sons. Yes, I do believe in the repetition of lucky chances! Thank you too for the offprint. My paper ‘A. & S.’ has now been sent off, to your address, not to the editors, for you promised me to read it through first yourself to see if you agreed with it; otherwise I do not wish it to be printed.
