PEP-Web Tip of the Day

When you hover your mouse over a paragraph of the Standard Edition (SE) long enough, the corresponding text from Gesammelte Werke slides from the bottom of the PEP-Web window, and vice versa.

If the slide up window bothers you, you can turn it off by checking the box “Turn off Translations” in the slide-up. But if you’ve turned it off, how do you turn it back on? The option to turn off the translations only is effective for the current session (it uses a stored cookie in your browser). So the easiest way to turn it back on again is to close your browser (all open windows), and reopen it.

Some Thoughts about the Synthetic Function of the Ego

Norman F. Bley and Monique V. King

The major contributions to the concept of synthetic function of the ego have been reviewed. We

have attempted to study the differences between the synthetic function and the integrative function. It seems that the transition point in the developmental line of the function occurs at the time of superego formation. A specific disturbance of the synthetic function, 'free aggressiveness', has been illustrated with clinical examples in the literature. A connexion is indicated between what many consider an abstract concept and the clinical observations of psychoanalysis.
