The Selection and Function of the Training Analyst

Bo Larsson

The following diagrams are conceived as illustrations to the three papers which were published before the 9th Pre-Congress Conference on Training in Helsinki, 23–25 July 1981. It should be mentioned that some of the figures presented both in the papers and the diagrams are misleading, partly due to the difficulties mentioned in Anne-Marie Sandler's paper and partly to other reasons. It was judged to be too large a task to check all raw data again but, as a whole, they probably give a realistic picture of the proportions of active training analysts, junior training analysts, non-training analysts and candidates in different parts of the world. Most of the figures are obtained from the pre-circulated papers but some of them are taken directly from the Questionnaires.

As can be seen, there are quite important quantitative differences in many respects, and although figures tell little about the quality of psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic training, they reflect major changes in the psychoanalytic world in the 80s. These changes are illustrated especially by figures 1A, 4A and 5A.
