Midwifery of the Soul: A Holistic Perspective on Psychoanalysis—Collected Papers of Margaret Arden: Margaret Arden, Free Association Press, New York, 1998, 200 pp., $21.50 paperback, $50.00 hardcover

Montague Ullman

Where are the new doctors of the soul?

—Nietzsche

In this slender volume of collected papers, Margaret Arden shares with the reader in a refreshingly frank way her effort to resolve what I believe every practicing psychoanalyst experiences, namely, the gap between practice and theory. To arrive at a perspective she felt comfortable with, one that would reconcile her admiration for Freud's enduring discoveries with what actually goes on in a session, she has taken the essence of Freud's contribution, his insights into the unconscious dimension of our existence, teased them away from later revisionists' attempts to make psychoanalysis continue to work as a system complete in itself, and has offered constructive suggestions for change and growth. Her message is simple but profound. Psychoanalytic thought is in need of systemic change.
