Editors' Introduction

Oliver Turnbull and Yoram Yovell

This issue's Target Article, by Simon Boag, is a discussion of several theoretical issues related to Freudian dream theory. Dreams are, of course, a topic of central importance in psychoanalysis, but it is of special interest that they are also a domain in which Freud laid out a testable theory and have now become a topic for which there is growing neuroscientific evidence. As usual, the article is followed by a set of commentaries: neuroscientists and psychoanalysts who discuss various aspects of the proposal, as well as commentating on larger theoretical questions.

In the Original Articles section, we publish a paper by George Northoff & Heinz Boeker on the relationship between neuronal integration and certain defense mechanisms. There is also a philosophical paper on the mind-body problem by Vesa Talvitie & Juhani Ihanus, which discusses especially Freud's classical approach as well as some more recent proposals made by Mark Solms. The paper is followed by a brief response by Solms.

As always, the issue ends with the usual Book Review, Research Digest, and International Bulletin sections.

Finally, we note that the operation of our journal could not continue without the assistance of a large number of reviewers, and the Editors of Neuro-Psychoanalysis are grateful for their assistance. We have published a list of those who helped to review manuscripts in 2005.
