William F. Murphy

SOUL SORROW. By Hjlmar Helweg. M.D., Ph.D. New York: Pageant Press, Inc., 1955. 151 pp.

THE MIRACLE OF LOURDES. By Ruth Cranston. New York: McGraw-Hill Book Co., Inc., 1955. 286 pp.

THE DOCTOR AND THE SOUL, AN INTRODUCTION TO LOGOTHERAPY. By Viktor E. Frankl, M.D. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1955. 280 pp.

The connection between the above group of books is more apparent than real. Holiness is Wholeness is written by a Catholic priest who is described as 'a leading figure in the International Congress of Catholic Depth Psychology in London'. A disciple of Jung, he commendably advocates a new recognition of the needs of the body and a revision of traditional Christian æstheticism and masochism. He believes that a neglect of legitimate claims of bodily energies, no matter how devout the motive, must lead to neurosis. His book deals superficially with the problems of adapting the body and the psyche to 'healthy growth in the life of grace', so that 'the ill-treated body' will not 'avenge itself and make body and soul alike diseased'.
