International Journal of Psychoanalysis. XXXVI, 1955: Notes On a Case of Drug Addiction. Julia Mannheim. Pp. 166-173.

The case of a female drug addict offered unusually rich clinical data. 'Her life was a desperate Odyssey in search of the mother and the seeking for her breast was the fantasy content of her addiction and homosexuality.' The latter brought her into analysis. Her love objects were motherly older women with voluminous breasts. Beside her ultimately fatal hypertension and cardiorespiratory symptoms, she showed neurosis and conversion and anxiety hysteria. Increased tension produced somatic disturbance which in turn led again to increased tension, this cycle being temporarily arrested by the drug. Addiction could thus be viewed as preventing psychosis. She was fixated at the first oral level. The case suggests that in some cases of female homosexuality the problem is an integral part of the syndrome of addiction.
