Group therapy is a method '… in which the emotional reactions of members of the group to each other and to the leader are understood as reflections of the intrapersonal conflicts of individuals'.

The well trained group therapist assesses overt and unconscious hostility among the members, much of which is a reaction to the anxiety caused by the

enforced proximity of one to the other. When such feelings have been worked through, the members are less fearful of exposure of forbidden drives, of retaliation, of rejection, and of self-sacrificing libidinal investments in others. This working through brings about that true unity of the group that is essential to the solution of members' problems. The process causes anxiety and requires fortitude and wisdom in the therapist.
