The relationships in pathological twosomes—heterosexual, homosexual, nonsexual—are characterized by regressive needs for dependency or narcissistic identifications, by inhibition of relationships to other people and of activities, and by conflicts which frustrate the union. Intense needs both for separation and for union often result from the lack of gratification.
