James F. Bing

The author establishes his thesis by a case presentation which can be summarized as follows: 1. Sadness is a mood which is used in order to defend the individual from the awareness of some painful experiential affects related to reality. 2. The mood of sadness not only arises in its transference revival aspects but is also genetically related to what the author calls "an intermediate phase in the differentiation of self-object cathexes."
