James F. Bing

Margolis describes a case of mother-son incest in which the individuals were in psychotherapy for nine years. He suggests that the frequency of such cases is greater than we have heretofore recognized. His explanation for this is that countertransferences and embarrassment on the part of the individuals involved cause the phenomenon to be suppressed or repressed. He discusses the relationship of the sexual impulse to the enormous aggressive drive that these patients have; in fact, the act itself may well represent more an expression of the aggressive drive than the sexual drive. This is further illustrated by frequent examples of the stabbing of mothers by sons which has obvious symbolic incestuous implications.
