The term, acting out, is defined, and the psychoanalytic literature on the concept is reviewed. The author identifies four characteristics which tend to predispose people to act out rather than to verbalize feelings, memories, fantasies, and conflicts. She demonstrates some of these with therapists working to help adolescents reveal and understand the unconscious meanings of their behavior.
