The Annual of Psychoanalysis. VI, 1978: Creative Responses to Early Trauma. Eric A. Baum. Pp. 257-271.

James F. Bing

From a rather short period of observing two children, five and six years of age, Baum generalizes about the origins of creativity. Each of the children had had early significant parental and object losses. The author feels that their creative manifestations are evidence of the need to master narcissistic conflict. While the article is interesting, these children were not in analysis and thus the material is relatively superficial. The author's conclusions on the basis of the patients' histories are highly speculative.
