Ehrlich presents a careful, critical summary of Heinz Kohut's major contributions. A chief criticism of Kohut's work is his emphasis on the acknowledgement and transformation of "fundamental narcissistic needs," while giving insufficient attention to social and cultural factors. Ehrlich applauds Kohut's plea for an "empathic milieu."
