Villela and Markin surveyed 296 adolescents and 160 adults, each group divided into three different socioeconomic groups, about their contemporary film preferences. The

only movie which was listed as a favorite by all three adolescent groups was Purple Rain. This paper contains a fascinating analysis of the film, demonstrating that it deals both with the promise of successful oedipal resolution and with the wishes and conflicts fueling and frustrating this resolution. It thus offers an encoding of inner experiences, making it highly appealing, especially to younger adolescents.
