Meeting of the Oregon Psychoanalytic Foundation and Study Group

Siegfried Berthelsdorf

March 7, 1989. THE MANAGERIAL MYSTIQUE. Abraham Zaleznik, D.C.S.

Dr. Zaleznik focused on ethics in discussing the application of psychoanalysis to business and government. In his presentation, he drew largely from Chapter 7 of his book on leadership and responded to the questions and comments from the audience. The first as well as the final challenging questions were about the feasibility of a successful indoctrination in moral values. There is good reason for insistence on this question, to which Dr. Zaleznik and others have given much thought. There is a more or less closed system of teaching and research in business schools as well as in other training institutions. This "mental cooptation" serves as an inherent program for survival, yet it poses a potential obstacle in the search for truth and integrity. Professionalism and audit committees, though intending to prevent or control unethical and illegal procedures, have obviously failed, as shown by the abundance of violations that are continually being exposed. The ones thus far exposed represent only a fraction of the ongoing successful violations.
