The papers in this issue were delivered at a conference on "Transgenerational Transmission of the Trauma of Nazi Persecution to the Second Generation," held at Bar-Ilan University, Ramat-Gan, Israel, in 1990. In a brief preface to the papers, the editor, Moshe Halevi Spero, writes that most presenters were psychoanalysts, and that audience reception was negative. The audience did not question "the validity of psychoanalytic theory per se," but questioned "whether psychoanalytic conceptualizations and interpretations were adequate to the task of knowing the Holocaust." This question is addressed in Spero's contribution, the last paper abstracted below.
