Understanding Psychotherapy the Science Behind the Art by Michael Franz Basch New York: Basic Books, 1988, xvii + 329 pp., $19.95

Review by:
Linda L. Gibson, M.D.

Dr. Basch sets for himself the formidable task of integrating the offerings of various schools of psychotherapy with research findings for the purpose of formulating a “scientific basis that explains how and why any particular technique works…” (p. 4). He proceeds with his task by dividing his presentation into two parts. The first section, comprising Chapters 1-5, is devoted to what Basch characterizes as “the scientific basis for psychotherapy.” Chapter 6, “The Heart of Treatment: The Therapist and the Transference,” in which he offers an outline of technique for the use of this scientific basis as it applies to the examination and management of the therapeutic transference, functions as a bridge to the “art of psychotherapy” as explicated in the concluding chapters.
