The Shadow of the Tsunami and the Growth of the Relational Mind, by Philip M. Bromberg, Routledge, New York, 2011, 215 pp., $41

Review by:
Marianne Horney Eckardt, M.D.

Philip M. Bromberg is a gifted creative writer who is able to transform our scholarly conceptual knowledge, which underlies our psychoanalytic or dynamic psychotherapeutic activity, by giving it wings as well as a voice that speaks with us. This book, Bromberg's third, continues to explore the mysteries of human struggles, their therapeutic repair, and their growth. He is a friend of the art world and draws on the wisdom of poets, writers, and movie scenarios to convey his messages.

His preface differs from what we traditionally expect. He does not give us a summary of the chapters to come, as he wishes not only to convey his ideas, but also to engage the reader relationally.
