Tribute to Joseph Silvio: Physician, Psychodynamic Psychiatrist, Psychoanalyst, Academic, Editor, and Artist: In Recognition of the Contributions of Joseph Silvio

César A. Alfonso, M.D.

Psychodynamic Psychiatry is grateful to have had the diligent and insightful input of Dr. Joseph Silvio for the past five years. As Book Review Editor, Dr. Silvio had a crucially important position and functioned with distinction. We are sorry to lose him but reluctantly support his well-earned need to retire. A tribute to Dr. Silvio follows.

The editorial leadership of Psychodynamic Psychiatry recognizes with gratitude the contributions of our Book Review Editor, Joseph Silvio. Dr. Silvio excelled in the role as editor of this important section of our journal, rising among his distinguished predecessors: César Alfonso, Joseph Merlino, Samuel Slipp, and Nathan Roth. Former book review editors are aware of the laborious efforts that this position entails. One must responsibly select books from publishers and authors and liaise with potential reviewers from the Academy membership, publishing companies worldwide, our editorial staff in Connecticut, the staff at Guilford Press in New York, and the Editor-in-Chief, all while staying attentive to print deadlines and making sure that the books reviewed are of relevance to the field and our membership. Editing reviews also means having to read the books being reviewed, and knowing the Academy membership well enough to match the books with the reviewers' areas of expertise. Agreeing to do this job for years at a time is by itself commendable. Dr. Silvio's editorial orchestration was impeccable, with extraordinary attention to detail and form while maintaining high ethical standards and fairness. He continued the tradition of the Journal carefully selecting books for review that favorably advance the field.
