Climate of Opinion: Sigmund Freud in Poetry, edited and with an Introduction by Irene Willis, International Psychoanalytic Books, 2017, 182 pp.

Review by:
Gemma Marangoni Ainslie, Ph.D., ABPP

“It was at that age that poetry came in search of me.” Pablo Neruda

In Climate of Opinion, poet and poetry editor for International Psychoanalysis Irene Willis offers a finely curated perspective on Freud and psychoanalysis from the viewpoints of poets, past and present. The book's title, a quote from one of the best known poems about Freud, invites one into dozens of worthy entries, many the poems of academics and psychoanalysts as well as patients whose names are well known, but equally many by writers who will be new to most readers. There is neither science nor reason to what Willis includes, only her poet's sensibility.
