Politics and/of/in/for Psychoanalysis Related Papers

Andrew Samuels, D.H.L.

Reading this vital, informed, and inspiring conversation led me to draw up a list of the following closely related and overlapping phenomena:

(1)  the politics of the professions of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis

(2)  the application of psychoanalytic ideas in a quest for deeper understandings of political processes and problems

(3)  the usage by politicians and political groupings of psychoanalytic ideas for furtherance of their own aims and objectives

(4)  political projects of whatever kind undertaken by organizations of psychoanalysts and psychotherapists

(5)  psychoanalytic understandings of the growth and development of the political dimensions of the subject-as-citizen

(6)  the struggle to apperceive the micropolitics of the analytical session itself—the power, vulnerability, and differing experiences in the analysis and in the social world of both participants

(7)  the devising of responsible ways to engage directly with political, social, and cultural material that appears in the clinical session.

In this response, I will work through this list with the expressed views of the Roundtable participants closely in mind. We need to recall that the list's compilation would not be possible without the elasticity of the notion of “politics” that feminism has made possible.
