Kim Bernstein, Ph.D.

I am sitting with the sailboats

watching them turn on their watery dimes

counting quarters for coffee

counting the blessings of my life in this city

counting sailboats

noting the number of times

they turn toward the spot where I'm sitting

which is when it gets personal

much as I hoped it wouldn't

much as I wish to stay out of it

wanting to be invisible

wanting no one to notice

I'm twisting through loss

one in a series that blotted out summer

a whole season in shadow

though really just the tip of the iceberg
