Sir Real

Warren Wilner, PhD

FIGURE 1  Max Ernst, “Euclid,” 1945, oil on canvas (color figure available online).

Ah! Sir Real

Strange, eponymous defender of the Real

Champion of surrealing our Real concealing

With eyes made surreal by Surreal-eye-zing our Realing

Sir Real.

Images of light and dark, real and surreal combine in seamless

union as in film Reel

Seen in assuring light, while avoiding Real-eye-zing surreal night.

Mercurial and terrifying phantasms of surreal and real, dark and

light fill Sir Real's sight

By keeping us in the light he protects from all but brief glimpses

of this terrible sight.

Every night must have its light

Sir Real, our knightlight.

Furtive efforts to escape the surreal by our own Ideal-ing

Just another Real concealing

From which we are flung Realing

While Sir Real continues his surrealing.

Now trying to Surreal our own Realing

But can there be Real Surrealing,

While the Real continues its concealing.

Finally Un-Realing

We attempt Sir Real's mask lifting

To leave no Real left for him to surreal

Surreal and Real eyes now closing in the Un-Real.

Having now no one to bring us our light

And Sir Real his night

Throws us into terrible fright, from which we try to take flight

We replace Sir Real's mask that, again, also permits us Real

concealing, and Sir Real, once more, his surrealing.

Who is Sir Real?

Is he Real?

Our lone, masked knight.
