The Meaning of Sacrifice. Thesis Approved for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of London, by R. Money-Kyrle, M.A., Ph.D. Published by Leonard & Virginia Woolf at The Hogarth Press, 52 Tavistock Square, London, W. C., and the Institute of Psycho-Analysis. Pp. 273, including Abstract and Index.

“Thesis Approved for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of London.” This sub-title alone is highly significant. It is certainly stimulating and encouraging to realize that a thesis on psychoanalysis can be accepted by the University of London for an advanced degree.

This thesis is a careful examination of the meaning of sacrifice. It reviews the various theories by the several anthropologists and finally reaches its explanations along Freudian lines, more specifically those laid down in Freud's Totem and Taboo. It is an excellent illustration of the multitudinous manifestations of the œdipus situation as they crop out and manifest themselves in this particular way.

The book is well indexed and contains at its end an abstract of its contents, chapter by chapter, which is of great value for reference purposes.
