(1936). Psychoanalytic Review, 23A:119

Mental Health Past, Present, and Future. By Arthur Hiler Ruggles, M.D. The Colver Lectures, 1932. Published for Brown University, Providence, R. I., by The Williams & Wilkins Company, Baltimore, 1934. Pp. 104.

These Colver Lectures, delivered by the author in 1932, deal with the subject of mental health presented in three chapters discussed from the point of view of the past, present, and future. They give in very condensed, readable form the high spots in the history of the development of the mental health idea with a brief discussion of each notable advance. The best chapter in the book is the last, where the author gathers all the trends of the past and present, representing the tendencies along which progress has taken place, and forecasts their probable accomplishments in the near future. An excellent, well balanced essay, especially for those who are interested in being oriented temporally in this field.
