Suicide and Mass Suicide. By Joost A. M. Moerloo. New York: Grune & Stretton, 1962, 153 pp. $3.75.

Review by:
Renatus Hartogs

Every therapist finds himself faced again and again with the rather intricate problems presented by the suicidal patient in daily clinical practice. Unless he has a thorough understanding of the origin, nature and dynamic depth of the suicidal constellation and knows fully the motivation of the incipient suicide, he will inevitably run the danger of inflicting damage where he wishes to help. Meerloo's book on suicide is a comprehensive, well-informed and contemporary evaluation of self-destructive motivation, in its clinical forms, its therapeutic aspects and its prognostic modalities. It is based on a reliable knowledge of the analytical psychodynamics and sociological factors which determine the thought psychodynamics and sociological factors which determine the thought formation, the feelings, attitudes and actions of the person who attempts and the one who succeeds in self-destruction, either as an individual or as part of a group or mass formation. Meerloo's sound therapeutic directives and suggestions are derived from a rather large professional experience with “suicidal man” and his book should be in the hands of all who deal therapeutically with self-destructive patients and desire reliable information and expert guidance.
