Ernst Kris and the Gifted Adolescent Project

Leo S. Loomie, M.D., Victor H. Rosen, M.D. and Martin H. Stein, M.D.

At today's memorial meeting, it would be most appropriate to offer some impressions from the Gifted Adolescent Project as a work in progress rather than to attempt a preliminary report. We will feature a number of Ernst Kris's impromptu remarks made at meetings of this seminar to which he gave so generously of his time and energy. Our selections have been limited to certain topics in which Kris's boldness and originality was demonstrated by either elaborations or revisions of older concepts. At some future date, it is hoped that a more complete account of this work can be presented in which the contributions of other participants may be included.

The background of Ernst Kris's interest in the arts and in the psychology of the creative process is well known. It appears to have been entirely in keeping with his native enthusiasm, his love of youth, and his own creativity that he should have been deeply involved in such a study as this at the time of his death.

The research plan was unassuming and direct. It was hoped that a number of young people with creative gifts in various fields, who were also in need of analysis, could receive such treatment through this project. A seminar of experienced analysts with similar interests would meet under the chairmanship of Dr. Ernst Kris at monthly intervals to discuss the material of the cases under treatment.
