Die Autoren versuchen, den Sinn der vielfach mißdeuteten Kokain-Passage in Freuds »Selbstdarstellung« (von 1925) zu rekonstruieren. Ihr Resultat: Freud polemisiert gegen die Fabel von Carl Ludwig Schleich als dem Entdecker der Lokalanästhesie mit Kokain und erinnert sich an seine eigene Rolle als Anreger seines Freundes Carl Koller.
