(Neoneeds in Pursuing the Impossible)

Filiz Torun

Adolescents and young adults torn between the terror of the future and the pain of the past, i.e. anxiety and depression, attempt to free themselves by drugging themselves (by getting numb), by numbing their feelings -at least for a while- and use sexuality as a drug. This is explored in reference to Philippe Jeammet's paper titled “Addiction” and Joyce McDougall's paper titled “Neoneeds and Addictive Sexualities.” The mother-child relationship at the origin of addiction, and how it reflects to and finds expression in sexuality are discussed. The importance of the need for difference and continuity (especially in clinical work with adolescents) regarding the issue of addiction is emphasized.
