El casamiento de Andrea del Sarto fué fatal para su arte. Su mujer era una persona desagradable, que le apartó de todas sus amistades e hizo fracasar sus tentativas en busca de triunfo. El sometimiento ilógico de Andrea del Sarto a su mujer fué un esfuerzo inconsciente para reprimir su intensa homosexualidad latente. La que antes del matrimonio se manifestaba, por ejemplo, en la intensidad de sus amistades masculinas y después del matrimonio en sus celos patológicos.
