Noticia: De este autor eminente nos dice Menéndez y Pelayo, que era el menos inglés de los críticos. Consumado helenista, fué catedrático de poesía en Oxford durante diez años desde 1857. Luchó infatigable contra el “filisteísmo” de la beata y satisfecha Inglaterra victoriana.

En el fondo de su poesía, que debía ser, según él reclamaba, a criticism of life, una quintaesencia de la vida, se debate la angustia romántica entre el pensamiento analizador del crítico y la nostálgica aspiración del poeta de un mundo de serena armonía.
