La anticipación de la muerte de un objeto sustituto y el duelo acompañante son operaciones defensivas contra el miedo a perder un objeto más significativo. Esta variedad de defensa contra una pérdida puede tomar parte en la resolución del complejo de Edipo durante la fase fálica. Esto fué demostrado en un paciente que, durante su análisis, tuvo un sueño premonitor de la muerte de su padre. Esto representaba una defensa contra el miedo de perder a la madre.
