Créer une zone de terminabilité

(Creating a Zone of Terminability)

Anne Maupas

The author focuses on the period preceding the end of a psychoanalytic treatment, a period which involves the reality testing of separation and the decathecting of the object, evoking the transitional space of Winnicott. This is a time of intense reactivated affect, accelerated transferential/countertransferential movements, and exacerbated defences. The conditions of the “censorship of the woman-as-lover” are put in place, a concept theorised by M. Fain and D. Braunschweig. The author uses clinical material to illustrate how the creation of the “zone of terminability” is an indispensable precondition for rendering an analysis terminable, even if it cannot be considered terminated.
