Idealization and Erotization in the Analytic Relationship

Franco De Masi

This paper deals with the intermixture of idealization and erotization in patients who, during the analysis, relate to the analyst in a way which is suggestive of a very primitive object relation.

This study is an attempt to demarcate the passage and/or the border line between idealization, erotization and sexualization, three intermingled elements which seem to be linked up with either a defensive state or with certain aspects of the relationship. I will also make a few observations as to the effects that these phenomena have on the patient and will consider the problems which involve the analyst, as the person aiming to direct the analytic relationship towards the achievement of the adult identity of the patient.
