My task is to set out the lines of thought within which to collocate or with which to confront the reflections that the work prepared by a group of us is to generate at this meeting of our Psychoanalytical Society during this Eighth National Congress.

It seems to me that we are obliged to start by asking ourselves if and how the theme we have chosen — Psychoanalytical Technique: history and changes — can have a historical motivation — a series of “strong” reasons, to justify its treatment at this point in the development of the S.P.I, and at this moment in world psychoanalysis.

If we take a look at the national situation several conditions are evident: the younger generation of psychoanalysts is carrying greater weight in the S.P.I,
