[SEG269a14]Earlier editions of this book of Loewenfeld's had included discussions of Freud's views; but for the 4th edition Loewenfeld persuaded Freud to write this paper. He agreed to revise it for the 5th edition, but in fact only made a single trivial alteration.

[SEG269a15]The most notable feature of this paper is that it contains Freud's first fully expressed withdrawal from his belief in the traumatic aetiology of hysteria and his first insistence on the importance of phantasies (views which he had communicated privately to Fliess many years before).
