[SES155a13]In this important work Freud gives his fullest account of the puzzling phenomenon of masochism. He had previously dealt with it, but always somewhat tentatively, in his Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality (1905d), Standard Ed., 7, 157-60, in the metapsychological paper ‘Instincts and their Vicissitudes’ (1915c), Standard Ed., 14, 127-30, and, at much greater length in ‘“A Child is Being Beaten”’ (1919e), which he himself described in a letter to Ferenczi as ‘a paper on masochism’.
