[SEV217a12]This paper first appeared in a periodical founded under the influence of Josef Popper (1838-1921), in a special number issued to commemorate the tenth anniversary of his death. Freud had written a shorter paper on similar lines ten years earlier on the actual occasion of Popper's death (1923f). Some account of him will be found in an Editor's Note introducing that paper (Standard Ed., 19, 260). The first pages of the present study give what is in fact a synopsis of the whole essence of Freud's psychological theory, written with characteristic clarity and precision.
