[SEW139a11]When this work was first published, both in German and English, it was accompanied by two long extracts from Freud's contemporary fragment ‘Some Elementary Lessons in Psycho-Analysis’ (1940b ). These extracts appeared as a footnote in Chapter IV of the German version (see p. 158 below) and as an appendix in the English one. The fragment from which the extracts were drawn was published in full soon afterwards (it appears below on p. 279), and the footnote and appendix were consequently omitted in the subsequent reprints of the present work.
