Review by:
Henrik Carpelan

Psychoanalytic technique has always been at the center of interest for psychoanalysts. New understanding has led to technical innovations and new findings and experiences have been made possible through new technical approaches. Development of theory has also opened new paths in technique. Freud's introduction of the antithetical couple of drives, Erose and Thanatos, did not lead to a technical revolution of psychoanalytical practice, and psychoanalysts in general took an oppositional stand to the new theory. Only Melanie Klein accepted it and incorporated it in her theoretical framework as well as in her practical approach. Lately (see for instance: La pulsion de mort, by A. Green et al., 1986), the problem has aroused renewed interest.
