Dear friend,

Enclosed letter for your assessment,1 if it's all right with you.

My position on the matter is as follows: I would wish for such a translation only in Deuticke's interest, i.e., for the sake of my position with regard to Deuticke. You are in a better position to judge whether it is desirable in and of itself. I don't know the man, and his letter doesn't permit any certain assessment about the measure of trust that he deserves, but rather it speaks against him. I would never wish that you make such a translation, because you have more fruitful things to do, but I would in any case make the stipulation to the man that he present the translation to you for revision or that he involve you in it in a publicly visible way—e.g., by accepting a foreword from you. Please reply soon so that I can inform the interested party.

I greet you cordially.

Yours,

Freud
