Sigmund Freud

Vienna, May 29, 1917
IX., Berggasse 19

Dear friend,

So, your extensive energetic care seems to have bestowed an ideal summer place upon us. I feel very obliged to you, and also call your attention to the fact that my dear wife is all too fond of being presented with gifts and protected, and shouldn't be spoiled too much. I am also unaccustomed to having someone else do so much for me; I am very unspoiled in this respect.

I can't promise you that I will also accept Dr. von Freund's hospitality. Although I like him very much and feel much trust in him, I don't want to become too indebted to him in a situation where the basis of the relationship is the medical connection to his wife. If he weren't also such an intelligent adherent, I would have struggled a long time ago against what has already taken place. Perhaps on August 20 we will find it timely to return to Vienna; or I can still hammer out a lonesome stay in Gastein, if therapeutic considerations justify it. But I would gladly accept the third room in Csorbató, and Frau G.'s presence will enhance the value of the stay for us all.
